INSTITUTE OF TIMBER CONSTRUCTION SOUTH SOUTH AFRICA (ITC-SA)

SA Timber Homes belongs to the ITC-SA which gives clients peace of mind knowing that your home will be built according to the relevant codes. The ITC-SA carries out audits once a year to ensure all the builder members are adhering to the regulations. The ITC also helps write up and update the codes of practice for timber structures together with the SABS in accordance with good engineering standards including keeping up to date with codes of practice from countries around the world.

NHBRC (The NATIONAL HOME BUILDERS REGISTRATION COUNCIL).

SA Timber Homes will soon be a member of the NHBRC as the company has only recently been registered. All new homes have to be enrolled with the NHBRC who ensure that the home conforms to the building regulations. The home must be registered prior to the builder doing any work on site. In the event that the builder deviates from the regulations or does not complete the works the NHBRC will attempt to force him to return or appoint another contractor to complete the work.

MUNICIPALITIES

All new homes and additions are required to have plans drawn up and submitted for approval at the local council (even if you are building out in the countryside). They normally require an engineer to be appointed prior to building, and regular inspections should be carried out by their building inspectors. You may not take occupation of your newly completed home until the council has compliance certificates for structural work, glazing, plumbing, electrical, gas installation, and if on a septic tank, a compliance for this as well. You could also be required to get a compliance for the insulation from an engineer or company specialising in this work. These compliances apply to all types of buildings not just timber homes.
SA Timber Homes can help you through this minefield of regulations.
